For the past two years, I’ve been writing The Mademoiselle Alliance, a book about a woman named Marie-Madeleine Fourcarde who fought against a collaborationist French government that declared abortion to be treasonous, and thus punishable by death.
I just finished The Women by Kristen Hannah. I learned so much about the war. I was in college at the time, protected from the daily news. I still have my POW bracelet. It’s a powerful historical novel. Everyone should read it.
Speaking as someone now based in the US, I think the Mademoiselle Alliance couldn't be more timely. I just listened to a historian speak about last weeks events, it was both frightening and comforting. All of this is to say there's so much we can take from the past to help us propel towards a better future. Can't wait to read it. xx
Hi Charlotte! Gosh, you're right in the thick of things over there. I hope we all have a little bit of Marie-Madeleine in us and we can use it to keep changing the world for the better.
You unpack so much (I mean that in the best way!), in every post. I learn, I laugh and am constantly impressed and forewarned. Once again, thank you for all that you share with us.
I just received an uncorrected proof and am so excited!! I work in Washington, DC reporting the first draft of history. Thank you for writing this post. Historical fiction - and the belief that telling these stories can shape the future - has changed my life.
Yes, I always say that historical fiction isn't always the right word for the genre; that it's as much a warning about what we might revert to if we don't pay enough attention to what's happened before.
Yes, we do need your Mademoiselle Alliance here in the U.S. as soon as possible, and I will recommend it to my neighborhood book club.
Thanks so much, Judy. I appreciate your support.

I'm looking forward to reading that one. Good to hear that you recommend it.

Oh wow! The proofs are out there! That's both terrifying and exciting! I really hope you enjoy it.
And your job right now must be very eye opening - I can't even imagine some of the things you must be seeing and hearing.
Your book sounds a bit prescient - given current events 😩!
I am looking forward to reading it 😁
